In its annual centralized report on end-of-year wait lists for rent-geared-to-income housing, Simcoe County reported there were 3,245 families on the list, up slightly from the 3,224 at the end of 2008.
However, the county has noticed seniors are most in need - and the numbers verify a county housing-needs assessment report that forecast strong growth among those age 65 and older. Now, there are 865 seniors waiting for assistance, up 53% from the figure of 566 in 2005.
"Our senior population seems to be the ones requesting lodging most, and the ones with the longest waits," said Penetanguishene Mayor Anita Dubeau, chair of the county's human services committee.
The report also indicated growth is driving need. Between 2005 and 2009, the number of applicants on the wait list increased 32%.
